Electrical Code Updates

Highlighted Changes from the 2011 National Electrical Code (NEC) to the 2017 NEC Effective January 2, 2020 for the UDC Program

1. Definitions: NEC 100 Receptacle. The definition has been revised recognize mating devices used to install luminaires and ceiling suspended fans;

2. NEC 110.14(D) Electrical Connection Torque Tools. New requirements were added for the use of tightening torque tools where torqueing is required;

3. NEC 210.8 GFCI Protection, New language added to clarify how measurements are to be determined for GFCI receptacles;

4. NEC 210.8(E) GFCI protection for lighting outlets in crawl spaces has been added;

5. NEC 210.52(A)(2)(1) Receptacle Wall Space. Fixed cabinets “that do not have countertops or similar work spaces” was added as an item that will constitute a break in a wall space for receptacle spacing requirements at dwelling units;

6. NEC 210.52(C)(3) Peninsula Countertop Spaces. The measurement point for peninsular countertops has been changed from the “connecting edge” to the connected perpendicular wall;

7. NEC 250.52(B)(3) Swimming Pool Equipotential Bonding not to be used as a grounding electrode. The structures and structural reinforcing steel described in NEC 680.26(B)(1) & (B)(2) shall not be used as grounding electrodes;

8. NEC 250.148 Continuity and Attachment of EGC to Boxes. Revisions to clarify that all equipment grounding conductors associated with any and all circuits in the box must be connected together and to the box and not just equipment grounding conductors of each associated circuit;

9. NEC 336.10(9) Uses permitted for Type TC Cable. Type TC-ER cable with a designation of ”JP” will now be allowed to be installed without a raceway at dwelling units; and,

10. NEC 406.3(F) Receptacle Rating and Type. New requirements were added for receptacle outlets with USB charges.
